Maes broke into a Highland Park home at 3:15 AM and spent eleven minutes collecting electronics into a duffel bag before deciding the operation ‘needed a soundtrack.’ He addressed the homeowner’s Echo Dot and asked it to ‘play some heist music.’ The device, configured with voice profiles, detected an unrecognized voice and sent a push notification to the homeowner’s phone reading: ‘Unknown voice request: play some heist music. No action taken.’ The homeowner called 911. Officers arrived six minutes later to find Maes still in the living room, mid-sentence, asking the Alexa, ‘Why don’t you work for me?’ The Echo Dot has been credited in the arrest report as ‘a cooperating witness.’ The homeowner has since purchased two additional Echo devices.
