Apodaca shoplifted a pair of wireless earbuds from an electronics store on South Lamar and fled on a rented Lime scooter with a top speed of 8 mph. Officers located him a block away, putt-putting down the bike lane at a speed one officer described as ‘slightly slower than my aunt walks.’ They followed him for six blocks at idle speed as he repeatedly glanced over his shoulder while making no meaningful gains in distance and occasionally rang the scooter’s bell at pedestrians. The pursuit ended when the scooter beeped a low-battery warning and Apodaca pulled over at a designated Lime charging dock to plug it in, telling officers, ‘I just need a couple minutes of charge.’ The earbuds were recovered, still in packaging, from his hoodie. The arresting officer noted on the evading charge: ‘evading is generous.’
