OVERLAND PARK, KS — A 58-year-old Overland Park woman called police Wednesday evening to report a “suspicious man lingering on the porch” after spotting a DoorDash driver delivering her own order, only to be informed by responding officers — and the driver — that the man on her porch was her 31-year-old son, whom she had not seen in approximately fourteen months and who had been working for DoorDash for the past six.

Patricia Anne Lawler reportedly placed a DoorDash order at 6:45 p.m. for a sushi platter from a nearby Sakura Express. She did not check the driver’s name in the app. When the driver arrived at 7:10 p.m. and rang the doorbell, Mrs. Lawler — who was watching from a window — allegedly dialed 911 instead of opening the door, telling dispatchers a “younger man with a bag” was on her porch and “could be casing the house.”

Family Reunion, Special Delivery

Officer Drew Mancini arrived to find the DoorDash driver still standing on the porch, holding the bag, looking visibly defeated. The driver introduced himself as Bradley Lawler, 31, and explained that Patricia Lawler was, in fact, his mother, and that he had specifically taken the delivery — using the app’s “target a specific address” workaround — because he had been trying to reconnect with her for over a year.

“I knew it was her order. I checked the address. I thought maybe if I just showed up with sushi, you know, she’d at least open the door. I did not think she would call the cops on her own son. From the window. While he was standing there. With her dinner.” — Bradley Lawler, son and DoorDash driver

Officer Mancini knocked on the door, explained the situation to Mrs. Lawler, and watched as she opened the door, looked at her son for approximately four seconds, and said, “Oh. Bradley. You got tall.” She then accepted the sushi, thanked him, gave him a $4 tip in the app, and closed the door. Bradley reportedly stood on the porch for an additional minute before getting back in his car.

No charges were filed. The incident has been classified as a non-criminal call but was nevertheless logged in the Overland Park Police blotter, where JailReport.lol obtained it. Mrs. Lawler is not pictured in our coverage out of respect for the family. Bradley has confirmed he is “doing fine, actually,” and that he is no longer accepting deliveries to his mother’s address. The sushi was reportedly very good.
