GREENSBORO, NC — A 35-year-old man’s plan to steal a portable toilet from a construction site for reasons he has yet to satisfactorily explain ended in his immediate arrest Monday morning when, after hoisting the unit onto a flatbed trailer and driving away, a construction worker emerged from inside the toilet at a red light and began pounding on the door.

Curtis Lamar Beauchamp allegedly backed a trailer up to a row of portable toilets at a residential construction site on Battleground Avenue at approximately 7:15 a.m. and, using a winch and ratchet straps, loaded one unit onto the trailer. Unbeknownst to Beauchamp, the unit was, at that moment, occupied by construction worker Hector Salinas, 41, who was “having a normal morning” until the entire structure lurched into the air.

Salinas told police he initially assumed an earthquake was occurring. When the toilet began moving down the highway, he attempted to alert the driver by banging on the walls and shouting, but the noise was reportedly drowned out by Beauchamp’s music. The situation came to a head at a red light on Wendover Avenue, when Salinas managed to force the door partially open and was spotted by a driver in the next lane, who called 911.

Beauchamp was pulled over and arrested. Salinas was uninjured but, in the words of the report, “extremely done with the day.” Beauchamp offered no clear motive, telling officers only that he “had a use for it.” He was booked into the Guilford County Jail on charges of theft and kidnapping — the latter added after prosecutors determined that transporting an occupied toilet against the occupant’s will technically qualifies.
