Beauchamp backed a trailer up to a row of portable toilets at a construction site on Battleground Avenue and, using a winch and ratchet straps, loaded one onto the trailer and drove off. The unit was occupied by construction worker Hector Salinas, 41, who was ‘having a normal morning’ until the entire structure lurched into the air. Salinas initially assumed an earthquake was occurring, then attempted to alert the driver by banging on the walls, but was drowned out by Beauchamp’s music. At a red light on Wendover Avenue, Salinas forced the door partially open and was spotted by a driver who called 911. The dispatcher told the responding officer there was ‘a man trapped in a moving porta-potty on a trailer.’ She asked them to repeat it slowly. It did not help. Beauchamp offered no clear motive, saying only that he ‘had a use for it.’ The kidnapping charge was added after prosecutors determined transporting an occupied toilet against the occupant’s will technically qualifies.
