Pennywell, a longtime competitor at the Emancipation Park Juneteenth BBQ Showdown, stole rival pitmaster Clarence ‘Big C’ Dubois’s prize brisket directly off his smoker during a lull in judging, using insulated gloves and a cooler he had brought specifically for the purpose. The brisket had been smoking for fourteen hours. Dubois discovered the empty smoker, turned, pointed across the park, and shouted what has since become a local catchphrase: ‘That’s MY bark, Otis!’ The judges knew. Everybody knew. Per the organizer, ‘You can’t fake a fourteen-hour bark. The smoke ring told the truth.’ The brisket was returned to Dubois, who won the competition partly out of sympathy ‘but also it was a really good brisket.’ The forty-year feud will continue next year.
