Pittman stole a running, unattended John Deere riding mower and drove it 2.7 miles through suburban Mobile to a McDonald’s drive-thru, where he ordered 40 Chicken McNuggets and a large sweet tea. When the cashier attempted to deny service, Pittman argued that a riding lawnmower ‘has a motor and it is a vehicle.’ He inched the mower to the window anyway. The cashier later told investigators, ‘He had grass clippings in his beard. He handed me a twenty. I said, sir, we cannot serve you. He said, I have cash. I said, it’s not about the money, sir. He said, then what is it about? And honestly, in that moment, I didn’t know.’ Officers found him still at the window having a philosophical conversation about the nature of commerce. He asked if they could ‘at least get the nuggets to go.’ They could not.
